Cornish Pilchards are now often marketed as Cornish Sardines! It is an old cornish industry dating back from .... when sholes of pilchards could be found of the coast around July. They were brought ashore onthe fishing boats and then lined into baskets with plenty of salt. Each barrel could hold several thousand pilchards which where then pressed to create about 35 Liters!
